Great British Springclean event: Sunday 4th March
The council’s Cityclean team are organising Brighton’s version of a nationwide event. It will be on Sunday 4 March from 11am to 3pm in front of the bowls pavilion. The idea is to launch Cityclean’s ‘Streets Ahead’ awareness campaign and to launch the city’s ‘Tidy Up’ scheme.
Among the attractions will be a silent disco . . . yes, strange . . . anyone who comes along will be provided with headphones through which a choice of music can be played – and cue . . dancing! And there’ll be a fancy-dress costume competition with the theme of Superheroes – it’s open to all and there’ll be a prize for the best.
The media should be there to report on the event. Hope to see you there too.
Easter egg hunt: Sunday 1st April
Just £1 for all accompanied children under 12. Track down the answers to questions about interesting features of Preston park to win yourself an Easter Egg. Enter our drawing competition to win yourself an Easter egg. Meet by the children’s playground. From 10.30-2.30.
Tree walk: Wednesday 20th June, 7pm
We are holding a tree walk at 7pm on Wednesday 20th June – meet outside the Rotunda. The walk will be led by experts Peter Bourne and Alister Peters. There is no need to book and there is no charge. The walk should last about an hour.
Preston Village Open Day: Sunday 24th June, 11-4
A free family event. Preston Manor: Discounted price for City residents, free for children; special tours St Peter’s Church: Teas and cakes; try bell-ringing; family-friendly craft activities with Strike-a-Light; Morris dancing at 4pm Churchyard: Self-guided tours Walled garden: Ploughman’s lunches; plants available; tombola; self-guided tours; bee-keeping on show in the kitchen garden, plus hop expert and scarecrow making
The Fitness Hub launch: Saturday 28 July
On the bowling green in front of the pavilion. Free.
Brighton Pride: Saturday 4 August and Sunday 5th August
The event will be longer than one day this year – details to follow. But on Saturday your Friends of Preston Park committee will, for the first time, be hosting a stall at the event.
Mayor’s Big Tidy-up: Thursday, 9 August
11am to 4pm near the Chalet cafe. Free, no need to book. A family-orientated event featuring a silent disco (it’s huge fun), children’s litter-themed stone painting (materials provided) as well as Mayoral involvement in drawing attention to keeping the park litter-free.
An Illustrated History of Preston Park walk: Saturday 8 September
2.30pm, meet outside the Rotunda cafe. Part of Heritage Open Days. Free, no need to book, takes about an hour.
A Tour of the Rock Garden: Thursday 6th September, Saturday 8 September, Saturday 15th September
With Andy Jeavons. Meet at the Rock Garden at 12.00 noon.
Halloween Lantern Walk: Saturday 27th October
